Plant Care
Watering
Calatheas enjoy weekly waterings, allowing the top 2' of soil to dry out partially. In winter, we recommend watering less frequently to prevent overwatering and root rot. This plant is not very drought tolerant, and extended periods of dryness will cause leaf edges to brown.
Fertilizer
Calathea Picturata 'Crimson' is a stunning plant with dark pink centered leaves with a deep green-black border. Their decorative leaves are the characteristic of Marantaceae family. The cultivars have very different leaf colors and grain drawings.
Light
As with most variegated plants, Calathea need plenty of diffused light. Direct sunlight will cause the leaves to fade and lose their markings. They can tolerate some degree of shade, but the more indirect light, the finer the foliage.
Temperature
Calatheas can be planted outside in warm climates (they don't tolerate frost) and are typically planted as part of a tropical landscape. They need shade, like in their native environment, where they're sheltered beneath the tall rainforest canopy.
Repotting
Repot your Calathea only when rootbound and avoid disrupting the rootball unless essential. Repot in early spring, increase the pot size by only 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm), and use a well-draining potting mix. Add fresh mix around the plant in the new pot and water lightly after repotting.
